2010 – Iki-shi, Nagasaki-ken, Japan, Earth

01-01

Playing taiko to the first sunrise of the New Year on the top of Take-no-Tsuji, the highest point on Iki.

We went to the top of Take-no-Tsuji, the highest point on Iki (they call it a mountain) to play taiko–traditional Japanese drumming–to wake up the sun on the first day of the New Year.  It was magical in a strange, cold way.  As I played, I honestly imagined that if I played hard enough, I would be able to see the first ray break the horizon.

Alas, the cloudy day made it not so.  The sun finally peeked above the clouds a full thirty minutes after the official sunrise.
