2010 – Iki-shi, Nagasaki-ken, Japan, Earth

Cutey Patooties.Today the Iki High School English club put on a really spectacular Halloween party for the local elementary school students.  About 30 of them came to play Halloween-themed games, get free candy (given out to them by local merchants after they squealed, “To-rick o’ TREE!”), and dress up in fun awesome costumes.  It was a great time, and I got to do a dry run of my “Other-Mother” costume, which was nice.  The common response from the chitlins?  “Her eyes are BUTTONS.”  “Are they real?”  “I don’t know.”  “I think they’re REAL.”  [look inquisitively at me.  I smile back.]

Ah, to be young again.

Halloween is a big time then? Just in schools or everywhere? Does any Japanese influence find its way into Halloween, or is it all American?

Who is that blue, whiskered animal there?

Halloween isn’t really a big deal at all, though most people know what it is because of us ALTs. If they do anything at all, it tends to be things put together by foreigners. I don’t think going door-to-door asking for candy is allowed, considering especially how much schools look down on eating candy.
