2010 – Iki-shi, Nagasaki-ken, Japan, Earth

11-02

Jizo! This is Unzen, the most famous hot springs in Nagasaki prefecture.  It’s cold up there!  Because it’s a mountain.  It’s also a great place to hike around, with some beautiful Hells of various sizes, roaring, and temperatures.  The limestone is really interesting.  And there are a few cute shops with good food.  I also went to the public hot springs here, which only cost 100 yen.  (Though I’m pretty sure my tattoos scared some of the old grandmas.  Sorry!)

Here we have a jizo (statue for safe travel) next to a vent letting out some of the hot air.  The waters in Obama and Unzen can get very hot–the hottest in Japan.  In Obama, there are some springs that reach over 110 degrees Celsius.  (Above boiling by a fair amount.)
